The Artist
Mohsen Matter (Mike Matter) an acclaimed Egyptian-American award winning domestic and international Fine Artist. Perhaps he is best known for his unique impressionist style that reflects the traditional Egyptian image and personality of people and places. His paintings also depict ordinary people engaged in contemplative thought and common activities. Mohsen’s love for his country and all people can be deeply felt in every brushstroke and in his unique mixing of colors. In recent years, his work extended to include a wider array of cultural and social settings while still making people the focal point. Many of his paintings were exhibited in USA, Europe and the Middle East, as well as decorating the rooms and houses of friends and devout admirers. In addition, his murals have been the aesthetic theme of a number of restaurants in Virginia and Pennsylvania.
Mohsen was born in a small province in Upper Egypt and at 3 years old, his family decided to move to Cairo. At age 7 his father, a renowned Scientist and Cancer researcher at that time, discovered his son’s infatuation with art, especially painting. The support and encouragement of the family played a significant role in their son’s artistic and academic life. Mohsen’s artistic talents were recognized early in his life. He was the sole designer and producer of not only his school wall and settings, decorations and scenes of all the plays and events, but also for all the surrounding schools.
It took Mohsen 2 years after joining the University of Cairo to discover his other talents. He was gifted in play writing, acting and producing the most famous plays and in 1972, he received the first award for the best play performed at the university. Soon afterwards, his father decided to send him to Paris to be in the heart of Arts in the city of Lights.
In Paris, Mohsen pursued his heart’s desire to become a professional artist. His first painting sold to a passerby in the streets of Paris for a very modest amount of money, but it felt great. This was a turning point in Mohsen’s life. To his pleasure, the young artist found that he could earn an income painting while having fun in Paris for a full year.
After his graduation from Cairo University, Mohsen worked in the field of tourism, which gave him a valuable chance to see the breathtaking tourist attractions of his beloved Egypt. This exposure deepened his artistic visions of the country and its people, which he exquisitely reflected in many of his paintings. His connection to the motherland and people never relinquished although he has been residing in America since 1980. In 1985, Mohsen received his Ph.D. in Science for Egyptology-Archaeology.
Mohsen is also an expert in the Coptic history of Egypt and has great knowledge of the culture and peoples of the Middle East and Europe.
T
he artist’s world changed dramatically as a result of his world travels and his new life in America which birthed the inspiration of FACE to FACE art. Among the peoples, cultures and great cities of the world, our artist saw and created faces that many now say are real people that have lived or live today. These pieces reflect the artist’s experiences with iconic places, the recognizable and famous faces, as well as the common and everyday faces of the people and great cities of the world. Like the artist’s own personal journey, every face he “sees” in the spirit and in the natural has a powerful heartfelt story to tell, that only you, the face of the viewer, can “read” into every character, in every piece of Mohsen’s art. You now become a part of the work of art as the “other face”, in FACE to FACE art. In Mohsen’s art, you become an integral part of the scene, in the pieces you choose to proudly display to grace your home, office, or public venue. Welcome to FACE to FACE. We are happy to have you become part of the Face To Face Art Gallery family of distinguished owners of our work.
